Working on huge rolls of employee names and numbers, the INCIDENT ROOM STAFF start making phone calls, setting up interviews with the 8,000 employees on RIDGWAY’s list.

TELEVISION. Head of the Yorkshire Ripper squad, George Oldfield, has today confirmed that Jean Jordan’s murder is part of the series of murders that they are investigating. The allotment area has been cordoned off by police who are still searching for any clues that may have been left at the scene. The police are appealing for witnesses who were around the Moss Side area the evening of the 10th of October to contact the Ripper Incident Room confidentially on Leeds 464 111. Concerns that the Ripper has killed in Manchester has stoked fears in the local community. Calls are being made to clear the notorious red-light districts with police insisting that their vice squads are out in force to keep the streets safe.

RIDGWAY (gesturing to MEG). You, clever one, take this down. For immediate release across all outlets: Today the West Yorkshire Police are making an urgent appeal. It’s almost Christmas. Families will be coming together, wives will be siphoning off money from their husbands’ pay packets for the big day. I need you to check those five-pound notes – if any of them come close to the serial number AW 51 1215656 we need to hear from you immediately. Check your savings boxes, check the money in your Christmas cards or presents, one of you is about to spend Christmas Day with the monster. He’s somebody’s husband, he’s somebody’s son. He’s somebody’s brother, he’s somebody’s father. Take a look at yours this Christmas, and see if he’s hiding the clue we’re looking for, and report him to the police.

MEG sits at her desk working, she’s our focus, as we move through a year.

ANDY (putting his coat on to leave). Merry Christmas.

MEG. Merry Christmas.

SYLVIA. Happy Christmas, Meg

DICK. Have a good one, Meg.

MEG. You too.

RIDGWAY. Up to anything nice for Christmas, love?

MEG. Paperwork.

SYLVIA (exiting for Christmas). I’m only having the one!

DICK. Yeah one bloody bottle. Are you coming? We’re going to The Bell.

ANDY. Yep, bye, Meg.

Discreetly, MEG takes off her wedding ring, and carefully puts it in a drawer, before returning to work. Time passes. MEG works on through.

TELEVISION. Here in Huddersfield, on a freezing January night, eighteen-year-old prostitute Helena Rytka met a brutal end. Superintendent Dick Holland showed reporters the scene of this latest murder attributed to the Yorkshire Ripper. It is believed that the victim travelled to this area with her attacker before she was assaulted. Miss Rytka’s twin sister has been assisting George Oldfield at the West Yorkshire Police’s Millgarth Police Station

ANOTHER TELEVISION. Yesterday afternoon children playing on Easter Sunday out on this spare ground in Bradford made a tragic discovery. Having been reported missing on the 21st of January of this year, the body of twenty-one-year-old prostitute Yvonne Pearson was discovered beneath an abandoned settee.

Miss Pearson was the mother of two young children.

TELEVISON (RICHARD MADELEY). Now a lot of girls walking
